How cold should my refrigerator actually be?
Aim for the upper 30s in the fresh food side and around zero in the freezer. Set a glass of water on a middle shelf overnight, then check it with a thermometer. Readings well above that range point to airflow or defrost trouble.
Should I unplug it while waiting for a technician?
If it's leaking water or making a loud grinding noise, unplug it and move food to a cooler. Otherwise leave it running. Keeping the doors shut holds cold air in for hours, and it gives us useful clues when we arrive.
Is a noisy refrigerator always a serious problem?
Not always. Some hums, pops, and gurgles are normal defrost and refrigerant sounds. Repeated clicking, a rattling fan blade, or a squeal that grows louder over several days is worth a look before it turns into a bigger failure.
Why does frost keep building up in the freezer?
Frost means moist air is getting in or the defrost system stopped working. Common causes are a torn gasket, a door left ajar, a failed defrost heater, or a bad thermostat. Scraping it out only buys time.
Does our hard water hurt the ice and water system?
Yes. Mineral scale narrows fill tubes and coats the inlet valve screen, and it leaves cloudy ice with an off taste. Changing the filter on schedule helps. Once scale has built up, valve or line parts usually need replacing.
Can you work on a fridge in a basement or garage?
We do, as long as there's room to pull the unit out and reach the back panel. Units in unheated spaces can struggle through freeze-thaw swings, since low ambient temps confuse the thermostat and stall the compressor.
